2Labs Advisory
2Labs Advisory provides senior technology leadership to Canadian not-for-profits and charities without the cost of a full-time CIO. Services are a Technology & AI Health Check at $3,500 fixed, ongoing Fractional CIO support from $2,500 a month, a Cybersecurity & Risk Review from $4,500, Design Thinking Facilitation from $3,000 a session, and scoped AI Advisory. The advice is vendor-neutral.
Advisory · for not-for-profits and charities

The technology leadership a charity could never justify hiring.

Most not-for-profits are making six-figure technology decisions with nobody in the room whose job is technology. Not because they are careless — because a full-time CIO costs more than most of their programmes. We fill that seat for as long as you need it and not a day longer.

Where most engagements start

Technology & AI Health Check

$3,500

Fixed fee. Optional board-ready deck, $1,500.

Situations we are usually called about

You probably recognise at least one of these.

The board has started asking about cybersecurity

…and nobody can answer confidently.

A contract renews in six weeks

…and nobody knows whether the vendor is still worth it.

The database was set up by someone who left in 2019

…and it has been quietly accumulating workarounds ever since.

You are about to spend real money on a platform

…and want a second opinion before you sign.

A funder is asking about data protection

…and you cannot currently answer the questions.

Everyone says you should be using AI

…and nobody can tell you where to start.

The experience behind the advice

Two decades of this work, mostly in organizations like yours.

Regulators, associations, charities, foundations and public-sector organizations — modernization programmes, cloud migrations, CRM and case management systems, cybersecurity oversight, vendor management and executive reporting. Several of those projects received external recognition, including Microsoft Impact Awards.

How it works

No procurement theatre.

  1. 01

    A thirty-minute conversation

What you are dealing with, and whether we are any use to you. Free, and genuinely no obligation.

  2. 02

A written scope and a fixed price

So the board approves a number, not an hourly rate with an open end.

  3. 03

    The work

Conversations with your people, a look at the actual systems, and honest questions.

  4. 04

    Findings in plain language

Written so a board can read it. If it needs a translator, it has failed.

  5. 05

    A prioritized plan

Now, next, later — realistic against your actual capacity and budget.

  6. 06

    We leave

Or we stay on a retainer if that is genuinely useful. Both are fine.

Why a software company gives advice

Because the advice is how we learn what to build.

We could pretend this is pure altruism. It is not. Sitting inside dozens of small organizations every year is the best product research available — the third time we see the same gap in the same kind of charity, that is a product rather than a coincidence. Donors exists because of what we kept seeing. So does Members.

It also funds the product development, which is why we can price software at $50 a month without taking outside investment that would eventually demand we raise it.

What that does not mean is that every engagement ends in a sale. The advice is vendor-neutral, we hold no product affiliations, and the most common recommendation we make is to spend less, not more.

What we will not do
  • Take referral commissions from vendors
  • Recommend our own software when it is not the right answer
  • Bundle a discount that gives us a reason to oversell
  • Bill hourly with an open end
  • Manufacture an ongoing engagement out of a one-week job

Questions boards ask

Can a small charity afford this?

The health check is $3,500 fixed, and that is deliberately the entry point rather than a retainer. If that is still out of reach, say so on the call — sometimes the useful version of this is one honest conversation, and we do not charge for that.

Are you going to sell us your own software?

Not unless it is genuinely the right answer, and we will tell you plainly when it is not. We hold no vendor affiliations and take no referral commissions.

Do you work with our existing IT provider?

Yes, routinely. Part of the value is being independent of them — we can assess whether they are delivering without our own contract being at stake.

What if we just need someone for a week?

Then that is what you should buy. We would rather do one useful piece of work than manufacture an ongoing engagement.

Can you present to our board?

Yes. The board-ready deck is a $1,500 add-on to the health check, and presenting it is included.

Do you understand not-for-profit constraints?

Restricted funds, grant reporting, volunteer boards, staff who do four jobs, and a fiscal year that governs everything — yes. That is most of what we have worked in.

Not sure which one fits?

Start with the conversation. We will tell you which, or that none of them do.
